Hive Engineering was engaged to provide a Structural solution for a small but architectural complex extension to a house in North Fitzroy for architects McBride Charles Ryan.

The house's unique shape required extensive engineering analysis to produce a simple structure that minimised the profile of the edge. We went through a process of design that considered the stacking of every skin to achieve the thinnest possible profile.

The complexity of the shape presented challenges for the documentation. We ended up scripting the house as a complex mathematical element so that we could accurately position the various layers that made up this building. The documentation was highly accurate as a result.

Hive has completed over 100 architecturally designed residential projects in Prahran, Fitzroy, Richmond, South Yarra, Middle Park, Albert Park, Toorak, Brighton, Elwood, Port Melbourne, Northcote, Warrandyte and the Mornington Penisula. Our focus is on achieving the architectural design in the most efficient manner. We focus on the sparing use of steel and attempt to maximise the amount of timber used in these buildings. The best results are achieved with the highest attention to detail. Millimetres matter. We use building modeling on residential projects too, so every house is thought through to a high degree of detail.

Hive Engineering's Directors like good architecture, and often this is best exemplified in Residential Buildings. We have undertaken a number of architecturally complex projects, and we enjoy the unique challenges that each one poses.

We have knowledge and capability to design cost effective structures. We utilise timber where possible and consider the factors that ensure builders can minimise the cost.

Our knowledge of commercial engineering techniques allow us to design structures using a variety of commercial methods including concrete and structural steel.
